Lost/Stolen Biometric Residence Card

The Asylum Journey has a new service which gives details about how to report a lost or stolen Biometric Residence Card (BRP).

The BRP card is given to a person applying to stay in the UK for longer than six months or applying ot settle in the UK.

It is important that a lost BRP card is reported within three months of it going missing as failure to do so can result in a fine and enforced removal from the UK.

A representative can report a BRP missing on a persons behalf and Citizens Advice Sheffield can offer support.

Register to Vote in the General Election!

Registration to vote in the upcoming General Election closes at midnight on 26th November.

Who can vote?

To be able to vote in a general election, you need to be 18 years of age or older, and either a British citizen, an Irish citizen, or hold a “qualifying Commonwealth citizenship.” It is estimated that there are around 895,000 qualifying Commonwealth citizens eligible to vote.

Qualifying Commonwealth citizens

A qualifying Commonwealth citizen is someone who is a citizen of one of 53 Commonwealth countries, and has leave to enter or remain in the UK. This includes Commonwealth citizens who are resident in Britain for example to work or study, with valid leave to enter or remain, or who have been granted refugee status or another form of leave to remain. It also includes Zimbabweans (with leave to remain) even though Zimbabwe is no longer a Commonwealth nation.

It does not include people seeking asylum, as they do not yet have leave to remain.

Check the full country list here.

Right to Remain have produced a useful blog with more information here.

The Asylum Journey includes information about Citizenship and how to contact an MP.
